Es wird künftig keinen SQL Server Web Edition mehr geben. Hier die Abkündigung von Microsoft:
Hello All,
In case you missed the big news at Microsoft Ignite this year, SQL Server 2025 is now generally available, with new versions of Enterprise, Standard, Express and Developer editions. However, Web edition is not included. SQL Server 2022 is the final version of the Web edition, with SQL Server 2022 Web edition remaining supported until January 2033 in line with Microsoft’s fixed lifecycle policy. Current customers are encouraged to explore alternatives such as SQL Server 2025 Standard edition or Azure SQL.
This change reflects how the market has evolved since SQL Server Web edition was introduced in 2008. SQL Server 2025 represents a major shift toward AI driven capabilities. With AI embedded into the database platform, security becomes more critical than ever. Customers expect enterprise grade protection to help safeguard sensitive data when leveraging advanced AI features. Some of these security guardrails such as Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) and Extensible Key Management (EKM) are only available in Standard edition and above, along with scalability and performance enhancements that support modern workloads and AI innovation.
Furthermore, Web edition has traditionally served small to medium web applications where cost efficiency is critical. Today, Azure SQL Database delivers highly cost-effective, scalable solutions for modern web workloads. Azure SQL Database elastic pools provide flexible pricing for multi-tenant environments.
In the longer term, discontinuing SQL Server Web edition simplifies licensing and eliminates unnecessary complexity for our customers and partners. With fewer SKUs, you will gain clear upgrade paths, streamlined management, and easier compliance, making planning and operations more cost-efficient.
For our SPLA partners, if you decide to continue supporting SQL Server 2022 Web edition for your customers, there’s an opportunity to help modernize their existing SQL estate. We are bringing flexible billing and Azure services to SQL Server Web edition (2016 and later, up to 2022) through Azure Arc, whether customers run SQL Server workloads on premises or in the cloud. This new capability will be offered through the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program starting on January 1 2026.
In summary, Web edition will not be included in SQL Server 2025. Partners with offers based on SQL Server Web edition 2022 should update your product roadmaps to reflect its end of life in January 2033. Customers are encouraged to explore alternatives such as SQL Server 2025 Standard edition or Azure SQL Database. We provide guidance and technical resources to help our partners and customers transition and modernize your SQL estate.
Thank you for your continued support on SQL Server!
